Curator and Arts Writer
Polly Dance is a curator and arts writer living and working on Kaurna land in Adelaide. Her practice is concerned with site-specificity, truth-telling, and materiality. She has a curiosity in archival and local history research and has undertaken many creative ventures to retell the stories of our past.
Notable curatorial projects include Standing on Ceremony (2021-22), Treasure of Pageants Past (2020-21) and People, Celebrating People (2018-19) exhibitions of contemporary art and historic archives at the Adelaide Town Hall and City Library, Musée Extérieur (2020-21) a public art trail of European art on walls throughout North and East Adelaide, PAINTFACE (2014) a series of site-responsive exhibitions at Constance ARI and other participating venues, and CACSA@70 Archives: Gathered Histories (2012) at Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia.
In 2012, she graduated from the University of Adelaide with Masters in Curatorial and Museum Studies. Prior to this, she completed a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours), specialising in History and Theory at UniSA.
Polly has been published as a visual art review writer in Real Time, Artlink, dB Magazine, and Editor of Vitamin – The Redux (2010) and Point Blank (2008). She works as Exhibitions and Collections Curator at Adelaide Festival Centre. Previously she worked as Curator at the City of Adelaide (2017-23) and Director of Constance ARI, Hobart (2013-14). She is a current Board member at Post Office Projects and was a former Co-Director of FELTspace (2011-13).
